Continued Drop in Unemployment Claims Shows A Tight Labor Market

Americans applying for unemployment benefits each week has hit a new low in late August that by one measure is the lowest level since 1969. Initial jobless claims rose by 3,000 to 213,000 in the seven days from Aug. 19 to Aug. 25. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast a 212,000 reading. The U.S. economy added 213,000 jobs in the month of June though the unemployment increased to 4%. The reason for the rise in the unemployment rate is due to the increase in the amount of people joining the labor force in June. Wages rose by 0.2% in June over May. The May 2018 Employment Situation brought more good news to the US Economy. Job creation came in at 230,000, ahead by 40,000 from most analysts’ predictions.
